December day trips from Cape Town
2020-11-05 12:09:58With the sun shining and the festive season about, December really is a great time of the year to enjoy one of a number of amazing day trips from Cape Town. Let us show you a selection of places to visit near Cape Town this December that we are sure you will absolutely love to see!
Grotto Bay
Gorgeous Grotto Bay is located roughly 68km outside of Cape Town along the R27. Although there are signs of development, Grotto Bay is still one of the Cape’s unspoilt gems with its pristine beach, vibrantly coloured wild flowers and diversity of sea birds and little creatures that have made this biosphere their home. If the need arises, one can easily drive to nearby Darling for some wine tasting or for afternoon tea and treats at one of the homely coffee shops there.
Attractions:
- Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve
- Cape West Coast Biosphere Trails
- Darling Wine Estates

Jacobsbaai
Although Jacobsbaai is situated close to the busy and rather industrialised towns of Vredenburg and Saldanha Bay, it offers visitors a balance between West Coast charm and serenity, and is a perfect place for a family weekend away from home. All the cottages here are built according to rigid regulations and all are painted white with no high walls or fences to spoil the view. This gives one a feeling of openness and freedom, and of being one with nature. There are many fun activities to entertain young and old: the kids can splash or snorkel in the icy, refreshing pools, while dad tries his hand at crayfishing among the boulders and mom collects shells on the beach.
Attractions:
- Bird Island Nature Reserve
- Cape Columbine Nature Reserve
- Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve
- Rocherpan Nature Reserve
- West Coast National Park.

St Helena Bay
St Helena Bay is known mostly as a fishing town, owing to the large catches of snoek that are sold fresh out the sea from boats at the harbour, but it has become increasingly popular with holidaymakers searching for a unique holiday experience. In spring, St Helena Bay is picture perfect with its granite boulders, sparkling ocean and patches of wild flowers that add splashes of colour along the coast.

Lambert’s Bay
If the thought of savouring freshly prepared seafood makes your heart skip a beat, be sure to head to Lambert’s Bay, a quaint seaside town 280km from Cape Town. Lambert’s Bay is special in that it boasts outdoor restaurants along the coast where visitors can enjoy their seafood al fresco, all while watching the sunset over the sea. Here too, visitors can taste traditional favourites, such as “waterblommetjiebredie” and “korrelkonfyt.” There is never a dull moment in Lambert’s Bay with many activities to make your getaway memorable: admire local arts and crafts in shops, take a boat trip out to sea for a close-up encounter with whales and dolphins, visit the museum to learn of the fascinating history of Lambert’s Bay, or pack your camera and bird guide and explore Bird Island, unique in that it is home to the most accessible colony of Cape Gannets in the world – the possibilities are endless.
